Over 100 summer camps at WCCC are free for D51 students
Summer is a much anticipated time of year for students of all ages. For many, after months of reading textbooks, writing papers and running from one activity to the next, it’s a time to relax, explore new passions and go on adventures. Fortunately for middle and high school-aged students, there is a wide variety of adventure awaiting them at Western Colorado Community College.
June 1 marked the start of summer camp season at WCCC. Over 100 middle and high school camps are offered all summer long, and for Mesa County Valley School District 51 (D51) students, the camps are free.
“We’re thrilled to host summer camps that span a number of subjects,” said WCCC Vice President of Community College Affairs Brigitte Sundermann. “From culinary arts, aviation to film, and computers to robotics and manufacturing, there’s a camp for everyone.”
WCCC, D51, El Pomar Foundation, the Mesa County Workforce Center and Grand Valley Transit are investing in some of Mesa County’s youngest residents by making sure today’s students have access to fun, educational activities at a time they need it the most.
"This past year has been a difficult one for everyone and we are thrilled to be able to bring this group of community partners together for these camps. What an incredible opportunity for these middle and high school students in the valley to have something to look forward to this summer. These camps are exposing students to new areas and opportunities that they may have never known before. They will leave the camp with new friends and knowledge and that is hard to beat," said Mesa County Valley School District 51 Communications Specialist Karrie Kuklish.
Summer camp enrollment is already at an all-time high with over 1,200 students signed up to attend. Middle school and high school students who are interested in attending a summer camp but who don’t have a ride are eligible to ride the GVT free of charge courtesy of Mesa County Workforce Center.
“These valuable partnerships show just how committed this community is to ensuring students have all they need to succeed. Whether it’s waiving the fee for a camp or helping them get there, this community truly is incredible,” said Sundermann.
D51 students who register for camps by June 30 can use the promo code summer2021sd51 to enroll for free. Charter, private and home school students are not eligible but may call the Community Education Center (CEC) at 970.255.2800 for other options.
